Recode

Recoding is basically performed when the existing variable is a continuous variable and we want to reclassify the scores into different groups.

STEP 1
  • On the Menu Bar, select "Transform" --> "Recode into Different Variables".
  • A pop-up window will appear.

STEP 2
  • Insert the variable which we would like to reclassify the scores into different groups in the "Numeric Variable -> Output Variable" box.
  • Click "Old and New Values".

STEP 3
  • A method to reclassify the Old Value is by using "Range".
  • Insert New Value as a new classified group in the "Value" box.
  • Click "Add".
  • Repeat the steps until all New Values has been formed.
  • Click "Continue".

Below is the example of my recoding from Old Value into New Value regarding the level of risk-taking.

0-2 = 1 (very low risk taker)
3-5 = 2 (cautious)
6-9 = 3 (moderate risk taker)
10-12 = 4 (high risk taker)

STEP 4
  • Insert the name of new grouping variable in the "Name" box under "Output Variable".
  • Label the variable for more detailed explanation or you may edit it later.
  • Click "Change" and then "OK".
